What are the suitable application scenarios of alkyl polyglucoside in industrial cleaning?
2026-03-09 15:33:40

Under the dual impetus of green industrial transformation and tightening environmental policies, alkyl polyglucoside (APG), a nonionic surfactant synthesized from renewable raw materials, is gradually replacing traditional petrochemical-based surfactants to become a preferred ingredient in industrial cleaning. Thanks to its core characteristics—non-toxic and non-irritating, readily biodegradable, and resistant to acid, alkali, and electrolytes—APG is increasingly favored in the sector. Produced from glucose and fatty alcohols, APG combines excellent wettability, detergency, and compatibility, has no cloud point, and possesses an adjustable HLB value, allowing it to adapt to a variety of complex cleaning environments. Based on these performance attributes, this article details the core application scenarios of alkyl polyglucoside in industrial cleaning, illustrating its value in advancing green cleaning upgrades.

1. Metal Surface Cleaning: Precise Adaptation to Multi-material and Process Requirements

Metal surface cleaning is a fundamental process in industrial production, encompassing descaling, degreasing, and defatting, with strict demands on the corrosiveness, detergency, and environmental profile of cleaning agents. Leveraging its acid and alkali resistance and low corrosiveness, APG can be widely applied to the cleaning of ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, and alloy materials. In steel workpiece pretreatment, APG is often used as a core component in alkaline degreasers. It rapidly penetrates the gaps between oils and metal surfaces, disrupting oil film structures, while avoiding the corrosion of workpiece surfaces caused by traditional strongly alkaline cleaners—making it especially suitable for degreasing precision mechanical parts.

For easily corroded non-ferrous metals such as aluminum and copper alloys, APG’s mildness is particularly advantageous. Strong acids or anionic surfactants in conventional cleaners can lead to surface oxidation and discoloration, whereas APG-based systems achieve efficient cleaning under neutral or weakly alkaline conditions while forming a gentle protective film that reduces secondary oxidation of workpieces. In electroplating and spray coating pretreatment processes, APG-containing formulations can lower the surface tension of metals to below 30 mN/m, ensuring uniformly clean surfaces after cleaning and enhancing the adhesion of subsequent coatings or platings, thereby reducing rejection rates. Moreover, APG balances defoaming and foam stabilization in metal cleaning agents, making it compatible with spray, immersion, and other cleaning methods.

2. Hard Surface Cleaning: Covering Public Facilities and Industrial Equipment

Hard surfaces in industrial contexts include building facades, equipment casings, transportation vehicles, and sanitary facilities. These applications place diverse demands on detergency, compatibility, and environmental performance. With excellent compatibility, APG can be compounded with LAS, AEO, and other surfactants to produce synergistic effects, significantly enhancing cleaning power while reducing the overall irritancy of the formulation to meet environmental labeling requirements. In factory workshop floors and wall cleaning, APG-based cleaners effectively remove oil, dust, and stains, are easy to rinse without residue, and prevent secondary contamination of the production environment.

In the transportation equipment cleaning sector, APG meets the needs of automobiles, train carriages, and mechanical equipment exteriors. Its rich, fine foam encapsulates dirt to minimize scratching, and its outstanding hard-water tolerance ensures stable cleaning performance under varying water qualities. Its degradation products are non-toxic and pose no threat to soil or water bodies. For specialized hard surfaces such as restrooms and laboratories, APG-based cleaners effectively remove stubborn deposits like limescale and urine scale, while protecting ceramics, rubber, and plastic components from corrosion, solving the problem of damage to precision parts caused by traditional cleaners.

3. Food and Pharmaceutical Industry Cleaning: Meeting Stringent Hygiene Standards

Cleaning in the food and pharmaceutical industries imposes extremely high requirements on safety and hygiene. Agents must comply with food-contact standards, leave no toxic residues, and be readily degradable. Alkyl polyglucoside has been verified as safe through food toxicological testing and can be used as a cleaning agent for food processing equipment, utensils, and packaging materials. It efficiently removes stubborn contaminants such as fats and proteins without leaving harmful residues, thereby avoiding contamination of food and pharmaceuticals. In production lines, storage tanks, and conveyors in food processing plants, it withstands temperatures above 80 °C, fitting the high-temperature demands of Clean-In-Place (CIP) processes.

In GMP cleanroom cleaning in the pharmaceutical industry, APG’s low irritancy and high compatibility are especially beneficial. It can be used to clean medical devices and laboratory apparatus, and when compounded with disinfectants, it enhances the penetration of antimicrobial agents while avoiding corrosion or damage to equipment surfaces. Additionally, APG is widely used in pre-cleaning of fruits and vegetables, effectively removing pesticide residues and dust while remaining mild and non-irritating, preserving the nutritional components of the skin without damage.

4. Textile and Dyeing Industry Cleaning: Adapting to High-Alkali Processes and Ecological Needs

Cleaning processes in textile and dyeing production include fiber scouring and post-dyeing cleaning, often carried out in highly alkaline environments, imposing strict demands on alkali resistance and environmental performance. Alkyl polyglucoside is readily soluble in alkaline solutions; even in a 10 wt% NaOH aqueous solution it remains uniformly dispersed, retaining over 90% of its surface activity, making it suitable for high-alkali scouring processes. In pre-treatment of pure cotton fabrics, APG-based scouring agents exhibit strong penetration, effectively removing waxes, pectins, and impurities from fiber surfaces while avoiding excessive scouring that would weaken fiber strength or dull luster.

In post-dyeing washing, APG serves as a leveling and rinsing agent, helping remove residual dyes and auxiliaries from fabric surfaces, improving dye uniformity and colorfastness, while reducing pollutant content in wastewater discharge. Its biodegradability can reach over 98%, effectively lowering the COD of dyeing wastewater and aligning with green production requirements in textiles. Furthermore, APG has mild thickening ability, imparting good rheological properties to textile cleaning agents without requiring additional viscosity modifiers, thus avoiding pollution associated with such additives.

5. Special Industrial Cleaning: Breaking Through Complex Environmental Application Barriers

Beyond conventional scenarios, alkyl polyglucoside can also be applied in complex industrial cleaning situations, overcoming the limitations of traditional cleaners. In high-salt, high-electrolyte environments, APG maintains stable surface activity and can be used to clean oilfield equipment and industrial facilities in saline-alkali areas, effectively solving the problems of additive failure and agent aggregation common with conventional formulations. In fire-fighting equipment cleaning, APG can act as an auxiliary component in fire-extinguishing agents, improving spreading and penetration while ensuring environmental friendliness of the agents.

With the upgrading of industrial cleaning technologies, APG’s application scenarios continue to expand. Companies such as Chenhua Co., Ltd. have achieved breakthroughs in APG form factors from liquid to solid, with flake and granular products offering more options for industrial cleaning formulations. In the future, through molecular structure modification and optimization of compounding technologies, APG will further enhance high-temperature resistance and detergency, enabling adaptation to more extreme industrial environments, achieving breakthroughs in high-end fields such as electronic component cleaning and precision instrument sanitation, and injecting sustained momentum into the green transformation of industrial cleaning.
